Cette rencontre faisait suite à un bref état qui s'était engagé au Congrès de Montpellier sur les "Bases biologiques de l'Aquaculture", où il était apparu que la terminologie et la méthodologie concernant le métabolisme des bivalves devaient être clarifiées. Grâce à une large information auprès des spécialistes français de la physiologie des bivalves, la réunion à La Tremblade a réuni un grand nombre de participants très motivés. Bilan energetique d'une population naturelle de Crepidula fornicata dans le bassin de Marennes-Oleron ArchiMer

An energy budget has been evaluated for a natural population of Crepidula fornicata living at low water of spring tides in the oyster farming basin of Marennes-Oleron. This budget of production was estimated according to the position along the chain. The average biomass for an individual representative of the population was equivalent to 1.87 Kjoules, and the annual consumption C was 20.08 Kjoules/year. The energy budget expressed in percent of energy consummates was: C = Pg + Pr + Ps + R + F; 100 = 4.6 + 1.6 + 0.8 + 48 + 45. This budget is compared with literature data on other herbivorous gastropods and with those calculated for Crassostrea gigas in the same locality.

Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer

One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Mathematical models for biological processes are presented as a set of tools for research, which ilave been created for specifie tasks impact studies, energy budget, test of hypothesis. Before using it, the mecanisms involved must be analysed, depending upon wether a whole ecosystem or one animal is studied (biological scale), physical conditions are taken into account (physical scale), with a predetermined scale for time. The no general method for analysis can be, as conditions of studies are so different, but sorne typical cases can show the approach of the modelizer and the recent developments of its tools.

There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. Impact of Brown Ring Disease on the energy budget of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer

Brown Ring Disease (BRD) is a bacterial disease caused by the pathogen, Vibrio tapetis. The disease induces formation of a brown deposit on inner shell of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. Development of this disease is correlated with a decrease in the condition index of infected clams. Experiments were conduced in order to assess the effect of the development of BRD on two parameters affecting the energy balance of the clams: the clearance and the respiration rates. An ocean mixed layer heat budget methodology is used to investigate the physical processes determining subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) variability on decadal-multidecadal timescales using the state-of-the-art climate model HadGEM3-GC2. Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of <i>Artemia</i> . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires <i>Artemia</i> this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Five particle traps were deployed at depths of 4 400 to 4 900 rn at two stations on the Demerara abyssal plain and one station on the Cape Verde abyssal plain (tropical Atlantic). At the same time, an intensive sampling of superficial sediments was carried out using a 0,25 m2 box corer. The total particle flux varied from 372 to 87,7 mg dry weightfm2/day. The average concentration of organic carbon was 40 mg/g of material collected. ln the surface sediment this was only 4 mg/g. Modelling the effect of food depletion on scallop growth in Sungo Bay (China) ArchiMer

Sungo Bay (China) has a mean depth of 10 m, a total area of 140 km(2) and is occupied by several types of aquaculture, whilst opening to the ocean. The production of scallops (Chlamys farreri) cultured on long lines is estimated to exceed 50 000 tonnes (total weight) per year. Selection of sites for scallop growth and determination of suitable rearing densities have become important issues. The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Simulation of tides, residual flow and energy budget in the Gulf of California ArchiMer

With the application of a two-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamical-numerical semi-implicit model, the principal tides M(2), S(2), K(2), N(2), K(1), P(1) and O(1) were studied. Energy budgets of the semi-diurnal M(2) and S(2) were calculated separately. The linear sum of these budgets was compared with the tidal energy budget obtained when these two tidal constituents interact. Since a quadratic form for the bottom friction was used, remarkable differences were found. Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 2. Production, respiration and food uptake by <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i> OMA

An energy budget was constructed for the marine nematode <i>Monhystera disjuncta</i>. Respiration was measured with a modified Cartesian diver technique, in which the nematodes were kept in agar inside the diver 'head'. The relationship between respiration and body weight was: R=1.53 W<sup>0.75</sup>. Body growth was exponential during the juvenile phase, with a growth rate equal to 0.61 d<sup>-1</sup>. Temperature, energy acquisition and energy use in the Chilean silverside Basilichthys australis Eigenmann (Atherinopsidae) RChHN

We evaluated the influence of water temperature (Tw) on the energy acquisition and use in the chilean silverside Basilichthys australis (Eigenmann 1927), an endemic species inhabiting freshwater ecosystems in Chile. We tested the effect of Tw (11.5, 14.0, 18.0, 22.0 and 26.0 °C) on food intake, digestibility, food transit time and metabolic rate. As expected, this study demonstrated that many physiological variables under study were significantly affected by Tw, as well as the net energy balance of this species.
